Hovannes Djibian is an Armenian Jazz pianist, born in Beirut, Lebanon. Hovannes was exposed to classical music in the company of his father, a photographer and a music lover as of 3 years old. During childhood he played his beloved tunes and themes from Rimski Korsakow´s Scheherazade and Beethoven’s symphonies on a melodica by ear.

He began playing piano as of age 14 and later on continued his studies at the National Conservatory of Music in Lebanon. Being in a constant search of new harmonic structures and confident that music should be played spontaneously to express the inner state of the musician. Hovannes continued his music education by exploring the realms of jazz improvisation and he was initially influenced by Bill Evans, Horace Silver, Ahmad Jamal and Chick Corea. He became one of the best and well-known Jazz pianist of Lebanon and played with Steve Philips Quartet, Avo Tutundjian Jazz Band, “La Candella” Latin Jazz Trio, José Fernandez Sextet, performed in festivals like “Jbeil”, “Hamra”, etc.

Musical development of Hovannes was formed during his postgraduate studies in Austria at Franz Schubert Konservatorium, Fond of sharing his passion and knowledge of different styles, Hovannes became a Professor of classical and Jazz piano both at Franz Schubert Konservatorium in Vienna and Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Lebanon.

The hallmarks of Hovannes’ style are the ability to create an authentic atmosphere, sense of absolute liberty by rhythmic innovations, melodic and harmonic structures. He incorporates classical music in jazz performances with boundless technique, a sense of humour and infallible musical taste.

Currently he performs with Djibian Trio and Authentic Light Orchestra in Austria and Switzerland with which he recently toured in Russia.
